Isla Capitanes

We were a few minutes late arriving at the beach in front of the Canadian shipwreck in Tamarindo. Tom already had the kayaks unloaded and seemed to be wondering if we had decided to abandon ship. We placed our things in dry bags and Tom was overly cautious launching us out through the tiny peelers in the bay. I was looking for the fourth kayak when Tom said that PJ and I would have to team up in a double.

The paddle to the island was shorter than I thought it would be and we were beaching our watercraft in no time. Tom is an older gentleman from Argentina who spends his days taking tourists on excursions around Tamarindo. He took us on a hike around the island, pointing out tide pools, animals and rocks that he had given names to. He tossed a banana to the starving hermit crabs and said that they get so aggressive because there’s nothing to eat on the island. Don’t fall asleep!

We did a circular tour of the volcanic island which brought us back around to our kayaks. We busted out snorkeling gear and floated about in the shallows looking at things. The visibility wasn’t all that great but we did get see a number of small colorful fish among the seaweed and the rocks.

It was a fun adventure and Tom was an interesting character. We made the easy paddle back to his truck where we helped him get everything loaded up before heading off into town for lunch and a bit of shopping.
