Scenic Niagara River

After a relaxing morning hanging around camp, we decided to jump in the car and explore the surrounding area. A short drive up the Niagara Shores Parkway, we arrived at the Devil’s Hole and the Whirlpool. On the top of the cliff overlooking the river was a plaque explaining some history of the area. How the natives tossed a bunch of English dudes over the rim into the canyon below.

We hiked along the rim until we came to the millions of stairs that brought us down the escarpment to the whirlpool. Jet boats full of tourists would zip up to the rapids and throw big u-turns splashing their riders and eliciting screams from the most adventurous people up front.

Call ICE if you spot any wily Canadians!
The Whirlpool, jump on in – the water’s fine!

It was about a four mile round trip. We reached the corner where we could see the mist from the falls in the distance. We sat on the rocky outcrop at the point watching the rapids forming into a standing wave. Pretty treacherous stretch of river.

What goes down, must go back up again

We hoofed it back to the car and headed over to the rainbow bridge into Canada where we sat at a tourist shack and ate some ridiculously overpriced fast food. Had to get Buffalo wings since I’m this close to Buffalo. 🦬 Made a few more scenic overview stops along the scenic route then made our way back to camp for some down time.

The falls in the distance

As evening approached, we rode bikes over to the beach and enjoyed a stellar sunset over the calm waters of Lake Ontario. Water was refreshing and the evening was just right temperature wise. An enjoyable day in northern New York.
