Casa Fénix

Today was meant for driving. Leaving our layover in Quepos for the cooler climes of the Monteverde cloud forest. I was assigned as pilot for the day and we got off to a mid morning beginning to the journey.

As we were passing Bejuco just south of Jaco, we decided to stop in at the Danish bakery we had seen on the drive down. I grabbed a pastry and we talked a bit with the Danish guy behind the counter. He’s done with Denmark he says. Too many taxes. PJ noticed a few shops in the new, modern, seemingly out of place shopping mall in the middle of nowheresville, Costa Rica. She found a long t-shirt to use for pajamas then we continued on our mission .

Got to have a portrait of the king!

Lots of traffic going through Caldera and Puntarenas but not long after there was the turn off to Monteverde and destinations northeast into the mountains. The road was sinuous and curvy slowly climbing in altitude. No more traffic and as we gained in elevation, the weather chilled to a comfortable mid seventies.

We got lost for a while rattling around on some back country 4 wheel drive tracks for a while but eventually found our Air BnB where our host Arecely welcomed us with fresh lemonade poured over ice cubes with bougainvillea flowers frozen into them. That and some home made pesto with crackers took the edge off of the tiring drive.
