Volant

Started the day off crawling around under the RV. Wiring to the O2 sensor looks okay, fuses were all intact and nothing loose. Guess I’m still on for a visit to McCandless Ford tomorrow. The idea today was to do a trip over to the quaint little village of Volant in the heart of Amish country. I hopped on my bike and followed the GPS down some beautiful little back roads with nary a car to be seen.

What the GPS didn’t specify was the gnarly hills that would have to be traversed in order to cover the 8 miles or so to get to Volant. I pumped my way up some killers and flew down some long, steep sections into the village, always knowing that what goes down must go back up.

The village was a bit of a disappointment. I had expected an Amish presence and vibe to the town. Things were quiet as a church mouse in Volant. Instead of buggies and churns, the town had a number of occult shops, tarot readers and witch themed stuff. Lots of cute little shops and chotske places. I grabbed a bite to eat at Hansel and Griddles but was reluctant to eat much before tackling the hills awaiting me on the return ride.

The GPS gave me a longer option with “fewer hills”. I opted for that. It didn’t say no hills, there was still work to be done. I had to grunt up a doozy just to get out of town. It was a good workout and I got to see some amazing farm country and sneak over the closed bridge that caused me a long detour coming into camp the other day. 18 miles before it was all said and done. Lots of deer and other varmints crossing the roads in front of me. Back to camp for laundry and closing up shop for an early exit tomorrow.
