The Broken Spoke

Early in the morning, I grabbed a cup of tea and sat silently on the banks of the lake. I was hoping some birds or varmints might come by for me to photograph but the woods here are lacking in wildlife. I read a little and had some quiet time then straightened up camp before going on a zoom meeting with a crew of my peers.

No varmints but plenty of bugs

Afterwards, it was off to the bike shop on PJ’s bike to get my broken spoke replaced. I guess that’s the price I pay for being ‘stout’. I’ve had a number of broken spokes lately, mostly on the mountain bike back home. I left the bike with Mike at Lost in the Woods bike shop then pedaled on into Sunbury to check the RV store for my connector and maybe grab a grocery or two.

Lost in the Woods Bike Shop

No luck at the RV place and no grocery store within a four mile radius. Every fast food chain on the planet but no grocer. So what’s a spoke breaking hoss to do? I ate a burger to kill some time and let the bike get finished. Grabbed a couple of monsters at the gas station and headed back. The bike was still not ready so I returned to camp to read and play some guitar. In the late afternoon, I went back and picked up the refurbished wheel and another T-shirt for the collection from Mike. Kudos to Lost in the Woods. I explained my predicament of just being a transient passing through and they went out of their way to get the job done quickly so I could have transportation on my travels.

Mike at the shop, a converted old house. Lots of character
A boy’s camp. No way PJ would put up with this look

Put the bike back together and took for a ride around the state park. Suddenly, a thunderstorm hit bringing gusts of wind and peals of lightning. Leaves were falling like snow as the breeze cleared all the deadfall from the tree tops. Dodged a few branches too. I raced home to close the awning and sat out the downpour in the RV. It was over in an hour. A little excitement for the evening

  1. What a surprise to hear PJ yesterday. She, Mary, and I are going out to lunch today. Lots of catching up to do. Take care of yourself, Mike. Love you. Meema
