Bluewater Lake

It was a super slow moving morning. Overcast with fits of rain. Removed the broken piece from the door latch and put the faceplate back on. The deadbolt works so that will be the fix until I pick up a new part.

My view

I was sitting outside relaxing about midday and noticed that the lake had calmed significantly and the sun was threatening to peek through. Got my gear together and as soon as the sun showed itself, I hit the lake.

There was a light headwind starting out paddling towards the dam. There were a lot of people out fishing and camping around the shore. A short squall passed through at about the 3 mile mark.

Then the sun came out and the lake went completely still. It was the kind of glassy conditions where the mountains and clouds repeated themselves upside down on the surface of the water.

That lasted about 25 magical minutes then the sky darkened and it started raining hard. As always, it seems I’m paddling against the wind. Worked hard and sprinted for home. 5.3 miles of lakeshore exploration.

Rested up and had a long chat with PJ. In the afternoon, the rain eased off and it looked like the sun might make another cameo appearance. I unhitched the bike and rode around the state park.

Went out the hiking trail to the dam. After a ways it got too tough for bluey so I locked him up and hiked over to the viewpoint above the dam. Another beautiful desert gorge where the creek used to run through.

Bluey patiently waiting

It began drizzling so I moved on and rode a short distance into the little community of Bluewater. A magnificent rainbow greeted me on the way out of the park.

There’s not much around the little neighborhood. Relics of old markets and businesses that might have flourished in different times. Returned to camp and sat overlooking the lake strumming my guitar while watching tons of weekend warriors setting up camp bravely facing the weather.

It started raining again so I moved my act inside only to peek out once more as the sun said farewell.

    1. It’s a wonderful spot in western New Mexico close to the Arizona border. We stumbled upon in 2016 when we were just going nomadic
